DEET Roll-On will be Necessary in Rio This Summer

Although Brazilian officials state that there is no risk of contracting Zika during the Olympics taking place in Rio de Janeiro this August, many are still incredibly skeptical of Brazil’s optimism. According to an article written by The Washington Post, Brazil’s new health minister, Ricardo Barros, says that there’s an almost zero chance of contracting Zika.

As of June, cases of Zika have dropped from 3,000 cases a week to 30 and officials say that 80% of the city’s buildings have been inspected for mosquito breeding sites.  The World Health Organization has also met twice to discuss the subject of Zika and whether or not hosting the games in Brazil may increase the spread of Zika.  They have ruled that there is no risk and that the games should take place as planned.

However, the locals aren’t as optimistic. Many Brazilians are skeptical of the government’s positive outlook due to the country’s political and economic crises. Many believe the government is not being entirely honest and inflating the numbers to quell fears about Zika and the Olympics.

Jesse Alves, an infectious diseases specialist who works at the Emilio Ribas hospital in Sao Paulo, believes that the government is exaggerating and that Zika still poses a risk to travelers and locals alike. Maria Sallum, a professor in the entomology department of the University of Sao Paulo, also says that while cases have dropped significantly, no one can say for sure that there’s a zero chance of contracting Zika when the Olympic Games begin in August.

While the official reports are optimistic, the team at NET effect encourages anyone traveling for the Olympic Games this summer to look into DEET roll-on insect repellent.
