A Fun and Simple DIY Citronella Candle Keeps Bugs Away

What You Will Need:

Before making your DIY citronella candle, gather the following items:

  • Large canning jars (Mason jars are a popular choice, but any large glass jar will do)
  • Unscented tea light candles (or other small floating candles, 1 candle per jar)
  • Citronella essential oil
  • Lemons and oranges (you can substitute limes for oranges if you prefer)
  • Fresh herbs (consider sprigs of rosemary, thyme, mint, bay, lavender or chamomile)
  • Warm water

Step 1

Cut the lemons, limes and/or oranges into thin slices and set aside.

Step 2

Gently pull apart your fresh herbs and rub them together to release their pleasant aromas and natural oils. Place them in the jar once this is completed.

Step 3

Fill the jar about halfway with warm water and add about 10 drops of citronella oil to the water and herb mixture. Place a lid on the jar, gently shake to mix the ingredients and oils together then open the jar. This will release a fresh, citrusy scent that bugs hate but you will love.

Step 4

Add the slices of lemon, oranges or limes to the jar and fill the jar the rest of the way with warm water.

Step 5

Add the tea light candle to the jar, and voila! Light the candle and place anywhere you want to keep bugs away!
