Why You’re in for More Mosquitoes This Summer than Usual

A Warmer Winter Means More Mosquitoes this Summer

You probably enjoyed a warmer-than-normal winter, but unfortunately, so did mosquitoes and other insects. Even with the occasional cold snaps that occurred, experts are basing their predictions of more mosquitoes this summer on irregular winter patterns that most of the U.S. experienced. Typically, mosquitoes either die off or go into hibernation when temperatures drop to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the species. So with much of the U.S. experiencing milder temperatures throughout the winter, more adult mosquitoes were able to survive for longer periods of time. This results in them laying more eggs, which will develop into larvae once the weather permits.

How Mosquitoes Survive the Winter

While some species of mosquitoes die off when temperatures drop, leaving only their eggs, others hibernate to survive the cold winter months. Many adult mosquitoes find warmth in a variety of protected places, such as inside of logs, holes in the ground and even in attics or basements of houses. Mosquitoes that survive the winter in the larval stage do so in water and often go into a state of diapause, slowing metabolism and preventing further development until temperatures increase. You can prevent adult and larval mosquitoes from hibernating around your home by getting rid of areas of standing water and filling in any holes or cracks around the exterior of your home.

What Does a Warmer Winter Mean for Spring?

Spring is known for bringing abundant rainfall to many areas, and when combined with warmer temperatures, mosquitoes are given the perfect breeding grounds. According to scientists, this spring will be even more favorable to mosquitoes due to warmer than normal temperatures. Based on current oceanic and atmospheric patterns, the majority of the U.S. is more likely to be warmer than normal in the upcoming spring months, as well. This is another factor that can contribute to an increased number of mosquitoes this summer.
